The TV series “Vikings” shattered preconceptions about Viking hairstyles. Some even criticized the creators for making their characters look like they just stepped out of a barbershop. Nevertheless, the looks of Ragnar, Björn, Ivar, and other characters are unforgettable. In this article, we’ll explore the haircuts of real Vikings and also examine Men’s Hairstyles from the series.
There aren’t many facts that could reveal the truth about Viking hairstyles. Most believe that warriors wore long, shoulder-length hair paired with a thick beard. This theory is refuted by carvings on tombstones. They depict Vikings with various hairstyles, including short hair.
Indeed, even braided long hair could be a hindrance in battle, and during conquests it was difficult to maintain. Vikings, however, almost never shaved their heads. This was considered the preserve of slaves. However, according to one version, kings (Viking warlords, supreme rulers) shaved their hair when they lost a battle.

Ragnar Lothbrok is the central character of Vikings. He is played by Australian actor Travis Fimmel. In Season 3, Ragnar shaves his head completely, but it was not a bald head, but a braided mohawk that captivated Vikings fans. Other characters in the series, such as Bjorn Ironside and Harald Fairhair, can also be seen sporting this hairstyle. Ragnar’s hairstyle requires thick hair. Travis Fimmel himself admitted in an interview that he had his hair extended. The procedure took about nine hours, and, according to the actor, it wasn’t the most pleasant experience.
Aside from the braid, Ragnar’s haircut follows the same principle as an undercut. The Viking has long hair on the crown and at the nape of his neck, with the rest of his head shaved bald. Achieving this perfectly smooth appearance is achieved with a straight razor. Strands of hair near the hairline on his forehead are braided into pigtails, which are then formed into a single, tight braid at the nape of his neck.
Until seasons 3-4, Floki wore a hairstyle that was noticeably different from the hairstyles of other Vikings characters. It’s short, tousled, and features a “lake in the woods”—the character had androgenetic alopecia. This strange hairstyle only emphasized Floki’s character: an eccentric, a renegade, a religious fanatic, gifted with an extraordinary mind and capable of rash actions.
Androgenetic alopecia is a type of baldness that is often inherited. Initially, bald patches appear at the hairline on the forehead, but without treatment, the hairline recedes further and further. At the same time, a fairly thick layer of hair remains on the temples and back of the head. In Season 4, Floki finally abandons his eccentric hairstyle and shaves almost his entire head, leaving a braid on top. He then removes the braid as well and appears with a short bun.
Rollo is Ragnar’s older brother, who has long remained in his shadow. His hairstyle has remained virtually unchanged throughout the seasons—long hair, braided or pulled back into a bun.
The hero’s favorite hairstyle is a small bun at the nape of the neck with the hair left loose. Individual strands can be braided. The unkempt hair is a signature feature of this hairstyle. To achieve this effect, allow the hair to dry naturally. This hairstyle looks best on thick or curly hair.
This character is remembered for his mohawk. However, some fans of the series have noticed Halfdan’s bangs, which cover half his face, and have questioned whether Vikings could have sported such a hairstyle. They say it’s easy to run into an enemy axe with this hairstyle. Other fans have compared it to a Cossack forelock.
Björn Ironside is Ragnar’s eldest son, a strong and determined warrior. He is determined to become a great leader and King of Norway. Throughout the series, Björn changes his hairstyle several times. In Season 4, he sports a braid, but in Season 5, he cuts it off. We’ll focus on the hairstyle known as the top knot.
In Seasons 3-4, he has shaved sides and the back of his head. The hair on the crown and crown is medium-length, pulled back into a neat ponytail.
